I used to only ever have fresh veg in the house, i never even contemplated frozen vegetables or incorporating it into our regular meal plans. Last week though we got the monthly farm food junk mail through the door and i noticed there any 5 bags of frozen vegetables for only £4.00…
Why not give it a go and see if the quality of frozen vegetables are up to scratch? to cut a long story short we bought broccoli, chopped carrots, chopped onions, mixed vegetables and a bag of sliced capsicums (peppers).
Not only where the frozen vegetables really cheap they actually taste great in cooking! Since buying them, i have cooked a cottage pie, omelettes, fried rice and soup. All of which all included some frozen veg. and i have got to say they taste great, there is no noticeable difference to fresh vegetables in many of the meals i have made apart from the price of course!
Benefits of frozen vegetables
Fresh vegetables will always have there place in my kitchen but i will now be a advocate for the frozen counterpart. there are many pros i have learned about why you may want to switch to using more frozen vegetables in your cooking.
I was forever throwing away vegetables because i dint get around to using them quick enough. With frozen veg though, it lasts for months in the freezer. This helps you reduce waste and save some money at the same time.
contrary to popular belief, frozen vegetables actually often contain more micro nutrients than fresh. This is due to the fact that vegetables tend to loose nutrients from the point they are picked. Freezing them at source locks in the nutrients and stops the rotting process in its tracks.
Frozen veg is so much cheaper than fresh veg in most places. like i said earlier, i bought 5 large bags of frozen veg for £4.00, it would be difficult for me to find the same value for money with fresh veg. The fact i also usually end up binning some adds to the cost of a fresh alternative.
I never really thought of the time saving i would get in return for buying frozen veg! i chose to get pre chopped veg. Cooking has got so much quicker due to this small change, i no longer have to wash, peel and chop my way to a winning recipe. I simply grab a handful or pour in my frozen veggies and i am on my way to eating it!
I would highly recommend buying in frozen veg and giving it a try. it will make cooking simpler, quicker and save you money at the same time.
As always live more by spending less.
