Having a baby can be an expensive part of your life. What do you need for a baby? What must have baby items do i need? These are some of the questions we had before being blessed with baby Noah.
Did you know that the average spend on your little one in the first year of having a baby is a whopping £11,498! How crazy! We tried to budget as much as we could, and narrowed down the baby items i thought we would need more. Out of everything though, only a few have made my best baby items. You can save money easily when it comes to babies, but these products for babies are definitely something i’m glad we spent a little more on.
I’ve put together the 5 must have baby items that we are glad we spent money on, whether it be used or brand new, we wouldn’t be without!
1. Baby car seat
When it comes to cars you can never be too careful. We do a lot of miles in our car and when I go back to work I will be doing a 20 mile round trip with Noah to my mums every day for childcare, so a decent car seat is an essential baby item for us. We bought brand new with this one as you just don’t know for sure if it has been in a crash before, which deems it unusable.
After a lot of research and a few tips off some car seat safety Facebook groups, we opted for the Joie 360. It has great saftey ratings and it will lasts until he is 4 which is fab! We also had vouchers for Mammas and Pappas so we used them to save some money! It has a recline option (which Noah loves), it spins 360 degrees, which makes it so easy to get him in and out, and it comes with a fixed isofix base. I would definitely recommend it for anyone due a new seat!
2. Next to me crib
We never bothered with a moses basket, up or downstairs. I felt they were a waste of money as they aren’t in them long. If he was napping downstairs when he was smaller, we used to pop him in his pram attachment. Although now he’s a lot longer and has outgrown that so he naps on the sofa instead (surrounded by a lot of cushions don’t worry). Once he starts crawling we will have to rethink the downstairs situation as it won’t be safe to leave him, but I’ll enjoy the fact that he doesn’t move for now!
In our bedroom we have a next to me crib. It’s a cot type of bed that attaches to the side of your bed and the side of it zips up and down so you can sleep with them without the worry of rolling onto them! We bought ours second hand off marketplace but got a new mattress for it. I’m glad we chose to do it that way as it’s in perfect condition and brand new ones are very expensive! I especially recommend this baby item if you are breastfeeding as it’s so easy just to slide the baby over in the night for feeds, rather that having to get out of bed at all ungodly hours! You need all the rest you can get when you’ve got a baby!
3. A decent baby sling
Have you heard of the 4th trimester? If not have a read up on it. It describes the first 3 months of your babies life to a T. They can be clingy and very needy during this time, so being at home on my own with Noah whilst Jamie was at work was hard work! I found the only way to get things done around the house was to wear him, literally, in a stretchy sling!
I researched slings before Noah was born and the Close Caboo looked awesome, which is the one we got! You can buy a similar one here. We bought it pre-loved off market place and it was perfect! After a bit of practise I could get him in and out in a matter of seconds and he always falls straight to sleep in it! It’s fab for when I’m shopping on my own so I can push a trolley hands free or carry bags around, as your limited to how much you can buy whilst juggling a basket and pushing a pushchair! He will soon outgrow it so I’l be looking to buy a new one for 15lbs+ if anyone has any suggestions I’d really appreciate it in the comments below. It is one of my favourite must have baby items on this list!
4. A good travel system!
This was the first thing we bought for Noah! It is one of the items for our baby we wanted to pay a little more for. Another pre-loved item here, we got a cracking deal with it. We chose the Silver Cross Wayfarer. It came with the frame, carrycot, car seat, older seat for 6 months+, rain cover and the lovely lady we bought it off even gave us the matching changing bag!
We tested them out in the shop first to make sure it was the one we wanted and then waited for a decent one to come up on marketplace. We were so pleased with it, it looks brand new still! It pushes so easily and folds small to fit into our little boot. We especially got so much use out of it as Noah was a summer baby so the first 3 months of his life, we were hardly home! I’m sure we will get at least another year out of it.
5. Video baby monitors
We started out with audio monitors that I bought in the sale from Argos, but I just couldn’t settle when he was in another room. First time mum syndrome kicked in and I was always sure something bad was going to happen and the monitors wouldn’t pick up on it (we’ve all been there). After moaning to Jamie about it he finally gave in and let us get some video monitors.
Jamies sister kindly said we could have hers as she doesn’t need them with her little one any more. How lovely of her! They are Motorola video monitors and they help put my mind at rest so much. I no longer sit in the same room as him whilst he naps as I can just check the camera quickly! I’m sure I will appreciate them even more once he is in his own room!
These are my 5 must have baby items and they have all been such good buys for us! Had we not got bargains with them, I wouldn’t have minded at all paying full price, as in my eyes, they’re totally worth it! Have you got any fabulous baby items that aren’t on my list? Let me know in the comment section, I’d love to hear them!
Good luck with parenthood. and as ever, live more by spending less!
